Volunteers needed for this year's festival

News from Sydenham Arts Festival
Sydenham Arts Festival 2012′s fantastic programme is now finalised and details will be announced very soon. Highlights include Arts in the Park/Family Fun Day on Sunday 1 July, an open-air production of The Jungle Book (3-8 July), a ‘Battle of the Bards’ playwriting competition and Word Explosion, and a family-friendly literary festival headlined by ‘Liverpool poet’ Roger McGough.
On the weekends of 7-8 and 14-15 July Sydenham’s artists will once again open their homes and studios to the public in the ever popular Visual Arts Trail – more details coming soon!

Volunteers needed!
SAF needs volunteers to help out in a variety of roles, including box office, leafleting, front of house, stewarding at events, technical crew and drivers. Anyone who’s interested is invited to an initial volunteers ‘meet & greet’ on Saturday 19 May from 11am until 1pm at the Golden Lion pub, 116 Sydenham Road, SE26 5JX. This will be a great opportunity to meet the Festival’s organising team, have a sneak preview of the Festival’s exciting programme, and let us know which events you’re interested in helping with. If you cannot make this meeting, our alternative date is Monday 21 May, 7.30-9pm at The Here For Good Centre, 17 Sydenham Rd, SE26 5EX.
Please email volunteersmanager@sydenhamartsfestival.co.uk to let us know whether you will be able to attend either of these meetings. If you know anyone who you think might be interested in helping with SAF 2012, please do let them know about the meetings – everyone is welcome.

Tomorrow’s South London Press will run an article about the ongoing consultation on the fate of Sydenham Police Station. The Metropolitan Police are considering the relocation of the Sydenham, Forest Hill and Perry Vale Safer Neighbourhood Teams to Catford police station, Bromley Road SE6 and to sell the police station in Dartmouth Road SE26.

We are very concerned about this proposal, particularly as Sydenham is experiencing high levels of crime (it is currently a “hotspot” for robbery and knife crime in Lewisham). The Sydenham Society is opposed to this move and will be seeking the support of councillors, traders and local organisations to help oppose it. We have over 800 signatures on our combined online and print petition – if you haven’t already signed this, please do so now. Go to the online petition below:

Canvas & Cream a new concept art space and dining experience in Forest Hill were host to Charles Saatchi and Nigella Lawson yesterday, there was a bit of something for both of them in Canvas & Creams’ unique Up-Cycled dining room which adjoins their Gallery/Project Space where artist Raf Zawistowski is exhibiting his new work.

After viewing the artwork in the Canvas & Cream gallery Nigella, wowed by the eclectic selection of cakes tweeted… ‘Fabulous Cakes at Canvas & Cream SE23 ‘You Must Go’, after being presented with an Up-Cycled gift box made from a cigar box, two glass trinket boxes and fairy lights, containing homemade cakes she sent out a picture saying ‘My enchanting parcel of takeaway cakes, why haven’t I, of all people ever thought of fairy light giftwrap’.

Canvas & Cream casually offers a fine dining cook to order menu and/or a tea with ‘fabulous cakes’, diners are surrounded by a creative Up-Cycled environment as they eat. See www.canvasandcream.com for details and events

Raf Zawistowski’s solo debut show was bought outright by Saatchi before the show opened.

Raf Zowistowski’s show Halo curated by Juan Bolivar is showing at Canvas & Cream Gallery/Project Space from Thursday 19th April until 1st June.

Zawistowski’s exhibition focuses on the relationship between materiality and his use of religious iconography, what Zawistowski refers to as existing between “the sublime and the anti-sublime”.

In this new body of work comprising of twelve paintings derived from the imagery of the 265 Popes to have reigned to date, Zawistowski hints at the Apostolic connection they have with the Christian faith, and the succession of spiritual authority embodied by these religious figures.

Summer created a sensation when published in 1917, as it portrayed a young woman’s passions dangerously at odds with her society.
