Sydenham Road signage
For 10 years John Fried of Woodfall Opticians has led a campaign for consistent short-term on-street parking along the length of Sydenham Road from Cobbs Corner to Bell Green. The Sydenham Society has supported John's pleas because many residents have parked in good faith thinking they were in a 7am-7pm zone, only to discover a parking ticket as the sign actually said the zone was 10am-4pm zone. Cllr Chris Best, through the Sydenham Road
Regeneration Partnership, has also put pressure on the Council's Highways Department.

Sydenham Traders, Sydenham Society and Lewisham Highways officers recently met to discuss how this could be carried out in order to obtain the best result for all local residents. The outcome is that the Council have said they hope to have changed all signs in Sydenham Road to allow 30 minutes parking between 7am-7 pm by 31 March (or as soon as possible thereafter). This will provide many extra short-term parking hours for the benefit of local retailers. Redundant sign-posts will also be removed in order to reduce pavement clutter.

The Society and the Traders put forward suggestions for additional parking bays and many of these have also been agreed; in particular, there will be welcome new bays outside Kirkdale Bookshop. Some double yellow lines will be changed to single yellow lines to allow for loading and additional disabled parking between 10 am and 4 pm.

This new signage, although long overdue, has come about as a result of full, and much appreciated consultation, between the Council and the representatives of people who live and work in
Sydenham.
