The amount of rubbish being allowed to accumulate in Station Approach is not acceptable and the Sydenham Society is putting pressure on Lewisham Council to resolve the situation.

The problem appears to rise from the granting of permission to turn unused properties into residential use but not providing adequate bin storage. Previously there were three euro-bins and a weekly rubbish collection was made. This resulted in overflowing bins with bags building up alongside, attracting fly-tipping in turn. It was agreed that this arrangement did not work and the euro-bins were removed. However, unless the council make a daily collection (and this regularly fails to happen) the bags continue to pile up along with fly-tipped articles. For visitors to Sydenham Town, this is their first impression - an inadequate station, very poor toilet facilities and a mountain of rubbish.

There is a similar situation in Kirkdale at Cobbs Corner where offices over the shops have been converted for residential use and bags of rubbish pile up around the lamp post and post box. This was so bad on one occasion that the post box was sealed as it was impossible to open.

Recycling facilities in this area are non-existent even though residential numbers are rising. Until this matter is resolved (adoption of the Sydenham Gateway proposals would provide the opportunity for this) there should be regular timed collections so that this sprawl of unsightly black bags does not clutter highly public areas and create a hazard to health.
