In 1998 the London Forum launched its media awards to encourage its 200 member societies to give more attention to communications and to recognise excellence. Founder and president, the late Walter Bor, architect and past president of the Royal Town Planning Institute, was always keen to encourage societies to communicate and promote their work more effectively. Accordingly, and with the support and approval of his family, the London Forum named these awards after him.
Every two years, there are awards for good practice in the areas of newsletters, Annual Reports, other printed publications and websites. This year a new category was introduced for the impact on the press and other media that members have achieved.
The Sydenham Society submitted newspaper cuttings covering the launch of our Sydenham Gateway ideas. The judges were impressed by our management of the local press and websites at the time of the official launch of our plans in our 2005 New Year newsletter, and awarded us the first ever Walter Bor Award for Press and Media Impact.
We have never previously submitted any of our publicity material, but with a new look newsletter and smart publicity leaflet we decided to have a go. In retrospect, our web-site should also have been put up for scrutiny - maybe in 2007?
Sydenham Society News was short-listed, as were many others from member societies - the standards of the newsletters of amenity societies London-wide is very high, as is other printed material. South East London did well with Westcombe Society (Shooters Hill) winning the newsletter category, and our sister society in Herne Hill gaining a well-deserved award for its Herne Hill Trail booklet.
Walter Bor's youngest son, David, presented the awards at a ceremony in November.
