Tuesday 15 April
Visit to Morden College, Blackheath Meet at bus stop outside Boots in Sydenham Road at 1.15 pm for the 202 bus which stops close by Morden College on the edge of Blackheath.
The college was founded in 1700 by Sir John Morden and was "a home for poor merchants in adversity, who had lost their fortunes in the dangers and perils of the sea." It is a beautiful example of Sir Christopher Wren's domestic style architecture, with carvings by Grinling Gibbons in the chapel. The college opened for 42 merchants who were in reduced circumstances through no fault of their own. They lived in small houses around the paved courtyard, each with their own hall and staircase. The College Archivist will give us a guided tour and describe its history. Cost £4 and numbers are limited.
